Are the green parts of a tomato toxic?
The green parts of unripe tomatoes contain solanine. Small amounts are okay, but too much solanine can cause headaches or nausea. And large amounts can even be dangerous. So it’s always best to cut out the green parts, or let green tomatoes ripen and turn red.
Is fresh always best?
While fresh fruit and vegetables are of course very popular, they often travel a long way from the field to the store. And along the way they lose a lot of their vitamin C. The degree of freshness also depends on their time in storage, the way they’re stored and the temperature they’re stored at. Frozen foods are often a very good alternative as they’re frozen very quickly after harvesting, which often means more of their natural goodness, such as vitamin C, is retained.
Common items that can also be washed in the washing machine
- Mop heads: Set the temperature to 60°C and then select any standard programme. If there are plastic parts attached to the mop head, add a few towels to the load to prevent damaging the drum. Always use heavy-duty detergent
- Stuffed animals & toys: Pop them in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase and wash them using the Plush Toy or Easy-Care programme and use ActiveOxygen if available.
- Sneakers: Always read the care label on your shoes to see whether or not they can be washed. Remove the laces and scrub any loose dirt from the surface. Use a short, gentle program like Cotton Normal. Put some towels together with your shoes into the washing machine to avoid imbalance and noise.
- Backpacks: Simply turn them inside out, pop them in your washing machine, and select the Easy-Care programme. To keep them at their best, never wash them at a higher temperature than 20°C.
- Pet collars, harnesses and leashes: Intensive heat from above. For roasting poultry, whole fish, larger pieces of meat and more.
