Some tips for you!
What you can put in a dishwasher and what you shouldn’t
Caps Vs. Non-stick pans
Caps can simply place them on the upper rack and use a low temperature programme. As for non-stick pans, salt, detergent together with the water pressure damage the coating and take the ‘non’ out of your non-stick pans.
Cooker hood filters Vs. Wood
Cooker hood filters can certainly be washed in your appliance – so say goodbye to annoying scrubbing and cleaning. On the other hand, wood is better washed by hand. Not only can it warp at high temperatures, it swells when wet and can crack, creating an ideal place for bacteria to breed.
Shower heads Vs. Knives
Clean lime scale off your shower head using the dishwasher. Sharp knives should be washed by hand as even one washing cycle can damage the blade and cause bluntness.
Plastic toys Vs. Crystal glass
If your child’s toys don’t contain batteries, you can happily clean them in your dishwasher. It’s hygienic, too. But your expensive crystal glasses are better washed by hand. Dishwasher detergent and salt can damage the surface and cause glass corrosion.
Meat buyer’s guide
The right cut: working vs. luxury: A luxury cut of beef or pork comes from the back of the animal and is more tender than a working cut. A working cut comes from the shoulder, leg or flank and need to be cooked slowly on low heat to become tender, while luxury cuts can be cooked quickly on a high heat.
Take a closer look at the marbling: While most of us don't like extremely fatty meat, you should look for well-marbled meat. Extremely lean cuts of meat will dry out quickly and have less flavour.
Bone in or out? : Bones are great conductors of heat, leading to shorter cooking times, they also help make great soup or bases for sauces.
The firmer, the better: Poke the fleshy part of your palm right below your thumb – that’s the firmness your meat should have.
It’s all about the colour: Fresh beef is dark or cherry red; brown coloured beef should be avoided. Fresh cuts of chicken and pork should always be pink and not grey.
